The year is 1991. Only two years since the communist regime fell. The whole country of Romania is struggling back to life: people are slowly beginning to comprehend that what had happened with their lives and destinies in the last half century is not quite right.
The year is 1991. City of Buzau, county of Buzau, Romania. A woman decides to give her baby to the local social services for adoption. The baby is taken into the state care and thus placed in a social center, waiting for someone to adopt her.
Later that year. The baby, a girl, is adopted by a family from Israel. Good family, working family, traditional family; the kind of family who strongly believe that good people (still) are the fabric of society. The baby is taken to Israel.
Life went on and the baby has grown; she is now crossing the bridge between teenage and adulthood. Life has been good to her; certainly she had more chances with her adoptive family than with the grey life of a grey neighborhood in a grey city of a grey country. Or so it may seem.
She finds out she has been adopted. Shocking as this may be, probably she felt it before that something is different. Or not. Who’s to know? Anyways, she wants to know her real roots, where does she come from, who is she for real? Worrying questions, especially for her parents. Her adoptive parents.
Her quest has been helped from the start (and who knows, perhaps a little push to rise has been given to this project) by an Israeli local broadcasting company. They hire an Israeli PI to find more on the natural parents background and whereabouts; however, the PI cannot do more than a couple of blurry results on the internet. Not much and certainly not enough to quench girl’s thirst of getting all there is to know.
So they hire a Romanian PI, to run an adoption investigation in Romania. He gets the expected results, and more. And on receipt of these, the girl decides to visit Romania and get a glimpse of what her life might’ve been. She will come accompanied by a cameraman and a director, they want to make a story off her, well, story.
The Romanian PI is joining the team in visiting the city, talking to people, and more important, serving as a connecting path between the local flavor and a distant yet eager to know herself child of these places. A regular adoption investigation.
Her natural mother refuses to acknowledge her; she barely agreed to briefly meet her for a few moments. The girl is shocked and hurt; she cannot understand why.
She doesn’t understand why. Or comprehend how can a mother deny her own child. Sorrow, tears, broken hearts. But sorrow will pass, tears will dry, broken hearts will be mended by this wonderful thing called life.
Sad story ends here.
Here, an excerpt from of the movie made by the Israeli television company, which shows (briefly) how Eurosurveillance CI and Julian Tanase helped Sumna to reconnect with her Romanian past. You can also check Julian Tanase’s article on LinkedIn about this case.
